Embroideries

~by Marjane Satrapi
2006 Eisner Award Nominee

Yet another fantastic graphic novel by the author and artist of the award-winning Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return. Embroideries looks into the hidden lives of Iranian women. After a meal, the menfolk leave them to clean up and talk amongst themselves over tea. Her grandmother states,"to speak behind others' backs is a ventilator of the heart," and so begins "a long ventilation of the heart." The conversation among family and close friends soon turns to gossip, men, love, and marriage: how to fake being a virgin, the mistakes made in choosing men, how to escape an arranged marriage, the joys of plastic surgery. Embroideries was a wonderful and insightful look into another culture. The clean black and white graphics are very effective and the book is a joy to experience.

After being sent to Austria by her parents, Marjane is faced with living abroad, alone as a teenager. She faces many choices and decisions growing up, and often does not make good ones. Eventually, she returns to Iran to be with her family and finish her education. But things aren't any easier and are just as dangerous as when she first fled the Islamic revolution.

Persepolis 2 is the sequel to Persepolis.

This book is absolutely amazing and incredibly potent. The illustrations (it's a graphic novel of sorts) are extremely effective. The story is that of the author and her family, as she grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Persepolis is highly recommended.

Marjane Satrapi also wrote a sequel, Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return.
