Vegetarian Judaism: A Guide for Everyone

~by Roberta Kalechofsky, Ph.D.

This book looks at vegetarianism from a Jewish perspective. It focuses on five mitzvot: pikuach nefesh (guard your health and life), tsa'ar ba'alei chaim (avoid causing pain to any living creature), bal tashchit (don't waste or destroy anything of value), tzedakkah (help the needy and work for a more just society), and klal Israel (work for the welfare of the community).

An excellent book, even if you aren't Jewish or vegetarian. It is extremely well written and informative and includes a terrific bibliography and recommendations for further reading. Highly recommended.
